Professor of Mathematics Gerard LaVarnway, PhD, has been awarded an Independent Study Leave through the Faculty Development Program. Prof. LaVarnway has been a full-time faculty member in the Mathematics department since 1983. During this time, he has published several classified technical documents on ocean surveillance and has developed mathematical models for predicting academic success at Norwich, presenting this work at regional and national conferences. His research interests include classification algorithms, ocean surveillance, cryptology, and mathematics education.
In Spring 2016, Prof. LaVarnway intends to work on three endeavors. The first is to extend previous non-parametric statistical techniques for predicting academic success at NU. The second is to continue relationships with the Air Force Research Lab in Rome, N.Y., to increase opportunities for Norwich STEM majors; these include internships, research, and future employment. Finally, Prof. LaVarnway will finish a paper on using cryptology to apply topics in Linear Algebra.
